The main goal for this demo is to create the Philosopher's Sauce (or the rainbow sauce). You can discover the recipe on your own or make sauces to accrue 25 research points to be rewarded the recipe.

CONTROLS

Left click to interact with items; some items can be clicked and dragged around.

Right click for secondary interactions like reading letters or hints.

Scroll wheel to rotate an object held in your hand.

TIPS

  • Focus a bit more on making sauces than just growing peppers! Making sauces is how you accrue research points, and unlock the recipe for the Philosopher's Sauce.
  • The mail will send you random 4 and 5 pepper recipes. Try to experiment to discover 3 pepper recipes on your own to speed up your research points.
  • Make the most out of your plots! The more you plant, the more peppers you'll have, and you'll be able to make sauces more quickly, if you organize your plotting right.
  • You can discover recipes on your own! You don't need to receive them from the mail. Test different combinations of peppers you have and see what you get.

GAMEPLAY

Drag peppers onto plots to plant them.

Click the calendar to progress time and grow peppers.

Use the crossbreeding chart to make new peppers; drag and drop peppers onto already growing peppers in the flowering stage to crossbreed two peppers together.

Harvest a fully grown pepper by clicking on the plot.

Drag between 3 and 5 peppers into the cauldron to make a sauce out of them. Not every combination is good, so discover combinations through experimentation.

Your ultimate goal; make the Philosopher's Pepper (rainbow pepper) and use it to make the Philosopher's Sauce (rainbow sauce).

Surprise Mechanics! Click to show, but it's more fun to discover!Click the cassette player button to toggle music. Hover a letter over the candle flame at night to burn and discard it.

Super cosy vibe, I had myself farming until I had stockpiled enough peppers to make a heap of sauce at once. Because of this, I had periods where I'd just be spamming the clock over and over again (what is it. like 21 times per harvest?) and this got quite repetitive. I'd love to have all of the separate mechanics intertwine even further--they work great consecutively, I wish they worked better concurrently! Loved this though, super fun!

Also, dragging the recipe book around like a maniac (or just dropping it from high enough) makes items disappear from the screen (probably physics'd out of existence). Not sure how to get any of it back!

Whoops! Thanks for catching that haha. The downside of physics based games. I believe this should only affect peppers, so not too game breaking I hope!

I’ll be able to fix this once the jam is over and submissions are no longer locked.

Thanks for the feedback!

I definitely get what you mean by repetitive, I’d’ve loved to iron things out a bit with more time. The stockpiling playstyle especially!

But I’m glad it was fun despite that! The core loop and systems being enjoyable is encouraging, and helps us figure out where to improve ^^
